Would this home get cell phone reception?
It’s a log cabin with metal roofing and a fully furnished basement. The area is at the foot of the mountains in south-west Virginia. Also, would the basement get reception? I believe it is fully underground.
Log cabins may or may not interfere with cell phone reception, largely depending on the thickness of the logs.
A standard milled log “kit” home consisting of 6-8″ timbers will probably have no effect on cell phone reception. Larger natural logs that have not been milled tend to be larger diameters and may reduce cell phone reception in some parts of the home.
The good news is that windows cure reception problems. So you can add windows or stand near existing windows to make/receive calls.
If your log cabin has already been built, simply walk around inside and keep an eye on the signal meter. If your log cabin hasn’t been built yet, you might want to find out where the nearest cell towers are, and specifically design extra windows facing in that direction to allow the signal to pass through into the house.
The roof is unlikely to have any effect on the cell phone signal beyond the normal effect that any roof would have.
A fully underground basement will probably have the biggest problem, because cell phone radiation is probably linearly or circularly polarized and cannot pass through the dirt around the basement. Most of the radiation would be channeled upwards instead of towards your local cell tower. However if the tower is close enough it might still work just fine; the best thing to do would be to just go down to the basement and give it a try.
